October 30 – November 1, 2020
Bull Creek WMA Trail Maintenance
Indian River Chapter

Scroll down to Register for this volunteer opportunity

Join the Indian River Chapter in maintaining the Florida Trail in Herky Huffman/Bull Creek WMA. We will be maintaining approximately 15 miles of trail. Work will include mowing, lopping, blazing, and hand sawing.

The Florida Trail follows the west side of Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area along the old railroad grade. Ties and hardware remain along the route. Pines in the northeast corner of the property still have “catfaces” (areas on trees where iron gutters were attached to harvest the pitch). Additional trailside history includes a small cemetery in Bull Creek, flow wells, and the remains of a turpentine still and sawmill.  Hikers have the opportunity of viewing sandhill cranes and wood storks along with cattle. Bull Creek offers hikers views of scenic creeks, expanses of pine flatwoods and floodplain swamp. A map of Herky Huffman/Bull Creek WMA can be viewed here.

Deer hunting is on hold in Bull Creek during the weekend of this work party. There is no charge for camping. If you have a camper you are welcome to bring it but there are no hookups. All meals Friday dinner- Sunday lunch will be provided. Please by plan to arrive no earlier than 4pm on Friday, Oct. 30th to set up camp and enjoy dinner with the crew. The workdays will be on Saturday and Sunday.

Please note: In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the FTA team and our partners have dedicated extensive time and care into creating new and safe operating procedures for our FTA events and volunteer work parties. With these COVID-19 Operating Procedures in place, our focus is to minimize all participants’ possible exposure to the virus as much as possible. The comfort and safety of our FTA community members is of utmost priority to us.

Per the FTA Covid-19 protocols we will break into crews of no more than 5 members each day, working on different sections of the trail. Camping will also be broken up into teams of no more than 5 members with one centralized kitchen cooking for the group. Meals will be served and taken back to each camp. Masks will be utilized when appropriate and sanitation guidelines will be strictly adhered to.

Hiking boots (description below) and long pants are required. Long-sleeve t-shirts are recommended.

This event is a free volunteer opportunity. Join our crew and have fun!
