Camp in a ghost town with the Heartland Chapter!
KICCO camp was a company town for the Kissimmee Island Cattle Company. The company operated from 1915 to 1920 and was a key port town on the Kissimmee River. At one time there were many homes, a bunkhouse, a mess hall, a company store, an ice house, a school and a steam boat landing. Today, sidewalks and foundations are all that remain. The surrounding landscapes are representative of the tall grasslands of Central Florida and the campsite itself is nestled in an active dude ranch. Come join our trail maintainers to blaze, mow and cut back vegetation on the Florida Trail. Be prepared for hard work, good food and campfire stories!
We will be working from Three Lakes WMA to the north fence of Kissimmee Prairie Preserve SP. We will be lopping, mowing and blazing approximately 12 miles of trail.
Arrive on Sunday between noon and 5PM to help set up base camp and learn what we will be doing for Monday – Thursday. Work will begin @ 8AM Monday.
[Note: This is a primitive campsite with a porta-potty. Potable water will be provided in jugs. Breakfast will be provided on Friday. Volunteer crews will tear down the basecamp on Friday morning.]
Hiking boots (description below) and long pants are required. Long-sleeve t-shirts are recommended.

From Lake Wales Take Hwy 60 E approximately 25 miles to Westgate River Ranch Resort. Turn RT onto River Ranch Blvd and travel approximately 3 miles. Drive into the resort and turn right onto KICCO Grade Rd (immediately past the cabins/Teepees). Follow KICCO Grade Rd approximately 1 mile to the trailhead and entrance gate. Town of KICCO Campground is 10 miles south from the entrance gate.
From Yeehaw Junction, take Hwy 60 W approximately 20 miles to Westgate River Ranch Resort. Follow directions above to get to KICCO WMA.

Physical Difficulty: Easy Activities. Volunteers will be assigned tasks based on their individual comfort level and technical proficiency.
Restrictions: Only US Forest Service certified sawyers will be allowed to operate chainsaws on the Florida Trail.

This information is treated as confidential information, and is only shared with Crew Leaders and the Florida Trail Association Staff. Please disclose all known medical and allergy information. This information enables crew leaders and staff to respond appropriately to medical emergencies. Medical or allergy conditions will not disqualify you from participating in a Volunteer Work Party.

Registrations are first-come, first served by date time stamp. You will receive an email confirmation within 72 hours. The FTA reserves a 10-person wait list, and will notify individuals on the wait list within two (2) weeks of the project date. Volunteers may be contacted the week of the event to fill open volunteer registrations.

*Note: Hiking boots can be either trail runners or traditional hiking boots (ankle-support preferred). No tennis shoes or sandals.

OR One (1) 100-ounce hydration bladder bag (preferred)
*Note: Each person should be drinking at least 3-liters of water a day. This is your personal responsibility.

DEET-based Bug Spray (recommended)
Bathroom Essentials (camp soap, shaving kit, etc.), Toilette Paper, Wash Cloth and Pack Towel
