City of Lake Butler Joins the Gateway Communities Program

North Florida Trail Program Manager, Jeff Glenn, writes:

The small city of Lake Butler is quickly becoming one of the most looked-forward-to stops along the trail.  The hospitality shown to Florida Trail users is well known up and down the trail and the overnight lodging provided at the historic train depot is a one-of-a-kind experience that thru-hikers will not forget.  There is easy access to a grocery store and restaurants to satiate even the hardiest of hikers.  Recently, Lake Butler became an official Gateway Community and received a new kiosk adjacent to the trail and depot building as well as the official Gateway Community highway signs at the entrances to the city.  The kiosk offers FT hikers, as well as Rail Trail users, a big picture glimpse of the Florida Trail as well as a multitude of great local information about the city.

As the Florida Trail becomes ever more popular as a hiking destination, Lake Butler will be there with open arms. It is partners like these that are helping to make the trail a destination for not just backpackers, but also the general public that is not yet familiar with the National Scenic Trail system. We look forward to a long and great partnership with the City of Lake Butler!
