Check out our chapter websites and Meetup groups for activities in your area.  Visit the Chapters page, scroll down to the bottom and look for your county.  Click on the chapter for a county to go to its web page.  Florida Trail Association activities include day hikes, backpacking trips, canoeing and kayaking, bicycling, picnics, and campouts.  Day hikes may focus on birding, plant identification, geocaching or historic sites.  Most activities are held locally, but some chapters travel to other parts of the state or out of state for extended trips.  However you like to enjoy the great outdoors, there's a Florida Trail activity for you!

F-Troop at Tick Island Slough, KiccoWorking in Florida during the winter months requires clothing that protects against both cold and wet weather yet can be shed as the daytime temperatures rise. Temperatures in the winter can vary widely during the day from the low 20’s F. in early morning to highs of the 80’s F. in the afternoon. These are extremes as most of the time the temperatures are from the upper 40’s F. in the morning with a high of 60-75 F. degrees in the afternoon.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING TO F-TROOP
The Essentials
Boots: Sturdy quality, full grain leather hiking/work boots are required. You will be using sharp objects such as axes and pulaskis and the need for strong, comfortable, and protective boots will be the most important item you can bring.

Rain Gear: Whatever rain gear you are comfortable in is fine, but please remember that this is trail work. If you bring your expensive outerwear, please realize that it could get ruined.

Work clothes: Long or short sleeve work shirts are acceptable. Long sleeves will protect you from bugs, underbrush, etc. Cotton or synthetic is OK, dependent on the weather. Bring both if you have them. Long pants are required when working.

Socks: Bring several pairs of what you normally hike in. If this is all new to you, try several different sock combinations with the boots you plan on wearing, until they feel comfortable. Walk around the block a few times in your boot/socks combination and you will soon know if it is going to work or not. Socks with some kind of wool or synthetic wool content are recommended for both comfort and warmth when wet.

Hat, Gloves: Bring a wool or pile hat for cold or cool evenings and an additional hat of some kind to deflect sun on hot days. Lightweight polypropylene gloves, if you have them, for cold mornings and evenings. Heavy-duty work gloves will be provided.

Wool Shirt, Fleece, Sweater, Jacket: At least 2 of the items in this category are recommended.

Other Clothes: Bring something to wear when not working. Camp shoes are a nice addition, also, so you can change out of your boots at the end of the day (sandals, sneakers, etc.) Swimwear is a must. Florida is a very casual state and very few situations call for formal dress.

Water bottles: You should have some type of container for carrying at least 3 liters of personal drinking water. Camelbaks are acceptable. Lexan (Nalgene) wide-mouth bottles are recommended.

Tents: We may have a limited number of 2 and 3 person tents available for use. If you have your own tent please bring it. It will be your new home away from home.

Sleeping bag: A 20 degree F synthetic shell with synthetic-fill or down-fill is recommended. Cotton sleeping bags are not recommended. If a cotton sleeping bag gets wet, it loses its insulating properties. If all you have is cotton, please bring it.

Daypack: You’ll need a pack big enough to carry your lunch, water, raingear, gloves and other items to the worksite with you each day.

Miscellaneous items: Please bring a flashlight or headlamp, pocketknife, and the essential personal hygiene items. (toothbrush, towels, biodegradable soap, etc.)

We will supply work gloves, tools, hard hats, safety gear, base camp cooking equipment, and first-aid supplies.
