Kickoff of the Panhandle Trace HikeEach April, the Western Gate Chapter of the Florida Trail Association hosts the Panhandle Trace Hike, a series of day hikes that lead you from the sparkling white sand beaches of Santa Rosa Island to the rolling clay hills of Blackwater River State forest (or vice-versa), connecting the two western terminii of the Florida Trail.

Spanning nearly 70 miles, the Panhandle Trace Hike is done as a series of day hikes with shuttles worked out by participants. After each day’s hike, you are welcome to camp with the group at a full-service campground or stay in your choice of nearby accommodations.

April is prime time to explore this part of Florida, when pitcher plant prairies burst into colorful blooms and mountain laurel heavy with pink and white blossoms shades the edges of Juniper Creek. The Florida Trail is the only National Scenic Trail to follow a beach, and you’ll experience two days of walking along the surf during this hike.  From the coastal scrub on Santa Rosa Island to pitcher plant bogs, local history, and some of the tallest pines you’ll see this side of the state, you’ve got to be here to discover it all.  Come join us on the Panhandle Trace Hike and get to know your Florida along the Florida Trail!
