Check out our chapter websites and Meetup groups for activities in your area.  Visit the Chapters page, scroll down to the bottom and look for your county.  Click on the chapter for a county to go to its web page.  Florida Trail Association activities include day hikes, backpacking trips, canoeing and kayaking, bicycling, picnics, and campouts.  Day hikes may focus on birding, plant identification, geocaching or historic sites.  Most activities are held locally, but some chapters travel to other parts of the state or out of state for extended trips.  However you like to enjoy the great outdoors, there's a Florida Trail activity for you!

Length:  4.6 miles linear

East of the Zephyrhills Airport, the Upper Hillsborough WMA is bounded on the north by CR 54 and on the west by CR 535. The northern trailhead is along CR 54, and the southern trailhead is on CR 535, about 0.8 mile north of Sam Pasco Park. The trail offers a level meander through pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and floodplain forest.

Overview

 

Red-shouldered Hawk (George Meek)The Upper Hillsborough River Management Area, owned by the Southwest Florida Water Management District, covers more than 6,000 acres and contains the headwaters of the Hillsborough River. The terrain is flat. During rainy seasons, shallow wading may be necessary. The area contains flatwoods, hardwood forest, cypress heads and swamps. Common wildlife include deer, feral hogs, turkeys and a wide variety of birds.

An interesting activity occurring nearby takes place at the ZHills “Sky Dive City” Parachute Center (west of the southern trailhead). Hikers may view large numbers of skydivers on weekends during the summer months and daily during the winter.

C3 Upper HillsboroughEast of the Zephyrhills Airport, it is bounded on the north by CR 54 and on the west by CR 535. The northern terminus is on CR 54, 100 yards west of the intersection of CR54 and CR35A, on the south side of the right-of-way. The southern trailhead is on CR 535, about 0.8 mile north of Samuel Pasco Park.

Trailheads

 

There are grassy parking areas at both the southern and northern trailheads. Do not block the gates

 

   

Conditions

 

Mostly level meander through pine flatwoods, oak hammocks, and floodplain forest.  

Precautions

 

If the river is high or it has rained recently, portions of the trail will be flooded. Hunting is permitted here, so wear a blaze orange vest during hunting season. Water is available at the picnic shelter in Samuel Pasco Park. No water is available on the trail.

  

Restrictions

 Hiking is restricted during hunting season. Contact the Southwest Florida Water Management District at 1-800-423-1476 or the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at 941-648-3203 for information on hiking during hunting season. Camping permits are required. Contact SWFWMD at 1-800-423-1476
