Check out our chapter websites and Meetup groups for activities in your area.  Visit the Chapters page, scroll down to the bottom and look for your county.  Click on the chapter for a county to go to its web page.  Florida Trail Association activities include day hikes, backpacking trips, canoeing and kayaking, bicycling, picnics, and campouts.  Day hikes may focus on birding, plant identification, geocaching or historic sites.  Most activities are held locally, but some chapters travel to other parts of the state or out of state for extended trips.  However you like to enjoy the great outdoors, there's a Florida Trail activity for you!

Length:  4.1 mile loop

The Taylor Creek Loop trail is in Tosohatchee State Reserve. The main entrance to the Reserve is on Taylor Creek Road, 2.5 miles north of SR 520 and 3.0 miles south of SR 50.

Overview

 

Cypress near Taylor Creek (Deb Blick)Shaped by alternating cycles of fire and flood, the Tosohatchee State Reserve is a mosaic of freshwater marshes, swamps, pine flatwoods and hardwood hammocks. Varied and unique plant communities support abundant wildlife, including rare and endangered species. The Tosohatchee marshes are feeding areas for wading birds. During winter months they host large numbers of migrating waterfowl. The forested uplands support white-tailed deer, bobcat, fox squirrel, bald eagle, gray fox, turkey, hawks, owls, and many species of songbirds. The reserve also contains a variety of rare and endangered species of flora, including orchids and hand ferns.

C4 Taylor CreekThe Taylor Creek Loop trail is in the southern part of Tosohatchee State Reserve, near the St. Johns River. A blue-blazed spur off the main loop leads to a campsite along Taylor Creek.

Trailheads

 

The parking area is on the south side of SR 520 approximately 7 miles south of SR 482 (Beeline Expressway) and approximately 7 miles west of I-95 near Melbourne. Look for the FT sign at the trailhead.

 

   

Conditions

 

The trail runs beside swamps, through pine flatwoods and oak forests, and along cypress forests.  

Precautions

 

Wear safety orange if you hike during special hunts.

  

Restrictions

 Tosohatchee Reserve is open from 8:00 a.m. until sunset. Hikers should register at the pay station when entering at the main entrance. Backpack camping is permitted with a reservation at designated sites, register at the park office. Car and RV camping is not available. There is no camping allowed during special opportunity hunts.
