Florida Trail Activities in Your Area

Side By Side
Check out our chapter websites and Meetup groups for activities in your area.  Visit the Chapters page, scroll down to the bottom and look for your county.  Click on the chapter for a county to go to its web page.  Florida Trail Association activities include day hikes, backpacking trips, canoeing and kayaking, bicycling, picnics, and campouts.  Day hikes may focus on birding, plant identification, geocaching or historic sites.  Most activities are held locally, but some chapters travel to other parts of the state or out of state for extended trips.  However you like to enjoy the great outdoors, there's a Florida Trail activity for you!

Tools training (Deb Blick)Growing up, most people are told that sharp objects are dangerous.  However, in regards to trail tools, dull edges are also dangerous.  So are worn handles, and broken, loose, or missing parts.

Mowers, chainsaws, axes, Suwannee Slings, and loppers are tools we use to maintain the Florida Trail.  It is important that they work properly, last for a proper length of time, and are safe to utilize through proper care and maintenance.  Here are a few tips for properly maintaining your chapters’ cache of tools.

  • Proper Storage – All tools should be kept in a secure, dry place, away from direct sunlight (UV damage occurs rapidly in the Sunshine State).
  • Proper Transportation – Tools should be secured in whatever vehicle or trailer they are being transported in.  When carrying tools, keep them at your side where you can easily throw them aside if needed.  Always keep any sharp edges in a sheath, and facing away from your body.
  • Keep sharp tools sharp – “A dull axe is a dangerous axe”.  A sharp blade will slice, chop, or split that which it is supposed to.  A dull one doesn’t work, and may even ricochet back on the user or another volunteer.
  • Repair/Replace any worn or missing parts – A mower won’t start with a bad spark plug, and an axe with a damaged handle could break at a dangerous moment.  Inspect your tools before every use to ensure that they are safe to use.
  • Lubricate – Without the right fuel mix, mowers and chainsaws don’t work, and axes and other metal tools can rust.
  • The right tool for the job – Don’t use a chainsaw when a pair of hand snips will do, nor try to cut out a blowdown with a pocket knife.  The right tool for the job makes the job more efficient and safer.
  • Take a Class! – Check in the Footprint and on the Florida Trail website for opportunities to take a Tool Maintenance Workshop or get your Chainsaw or Crosscut Saw Certification.  These courses all offer a great deal of information on tool maintenance—and safety!

When Trail Construction and Maintenance season begins, take time to make sure your tools are as ready as you are.  Have a safe and productive season.
