Florida Trail Activities in Your Area

Side By Side
Check out our chapter websites and Meetup groups for activities in your area.  Visit the Chapters page, scroll down to the bottom and look for your county.  Click on the chapter for a county to go to its web page.  Florida Trail Association activities include day hikes, backpacking trips, canoeing and kayaking, bicycling, picnics, and campouts.  Day hikes may focus on birding, plant identification, geocaching or historic sites.  Most activities are held locally, but some chapters travel to other parts of the state or out of state for extended trips.  However you like to enjoy the great outdoors, there's a Florida Trail activity for you!

F-Troop at Tick Island Slough (Kristin Johns)As the construction and maintenance season begins each fall, it’s time to provide some safety reminders that might be easy to forget about in our excitement to be back on the trail.

  • “First We Eat” – It’s not just our unofficial motto, it’s also a good idea.  Being properly hydrated and with enough “fuel” inside to properly run your mower is a good way to not only get more done, but to do it safer.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Wear it!  The basic PPE for Trail Maintenance includes an approved hardhat, eye protection, gloves, safety vest (during hunting season), and ear protection when using power tools.
  • First Aid Kits – Bring them with you!  Also make sure that the items in the kit have not expired or have been damaged in any way.
  • Chainsaws and Crosscut saws – Certification is the key!  If you haven’t been certified, you can use these tools.  Fortunately you can check the calendar on the Florida Trail website (floridatrail.org/options/Construction) for upcoming trainings.
  • Sharpen your tools – Sharp tools work better than dull ones and are also safer.  Make sure that you use gloves and safety glasses when sharpening your tools.
  • Lift with your legs – Much of the maintenance done on the Florida Trail is accomplished with large mowers.  When lifting them out of vehicles, trailers, or over large roots, remember your legs are more powerful than your back.
  • The Buddy System – It’s more fun to be working on the trail with our friends in the Florida Trail Association, but it’s also safer.  Better to have a least one person to help in an emergency, than to go it alone.  And why stop at one?  More hands means more trail maintained and more fun for everyone.
