Florida Trail Activities in Your Area

Side By Side
Check out our chapter websites and Meetup groups for activities in your area.  Visit the Chapters page, scroll down to the bottom and look for your county.  Click on the chapter for a county to go to its web page.  Florida Trail Association activities include day hikes, backpacking trips, canoeing and kayaking, bicycling, picnics, and campouts.  Day hikes may focus on birding, plant identification, geocaching or historic sites.  Most activities are held locally, but some chapters travel to other parts of the state or out of state for extended trips.  However you like to enjoy the great outdoors, there's a Florida Trail activity for you!

FTA Membership Dues Increase PDF Print E-mail

Today, non-profit organizations such as the Florida Trail Association must operate in a challenging and competitive economic climate. Organizations throughout the United States are relying on the internet and other social media to increase memberships and financial contributions, maintain their relevance and offset the ever increasing cost of day-to-day operations. While the FTA is also increasingly taking advantage of these technologies, the fact remains that we are primarily a “boots on the ground” organization pursuing a mission that deals with real trees, real dirt, and real hiking trails. That is as it should be.

The FTA boasts over five thousand loyal and dedicated members, many who generously volunteer their toil and expertise maintaining not just the Florida National Scenic Trail (FNST) but many other trails throughout the state.  They organize and chair chapter meetings, provide opportunities for the public to hike, host and attend outreach events-- all symbols of the generosity that our members share with society. They share a kinship and a mission with many others throughout Florida. They value time spent rambling in the great outdoors, and what this opportunity means to present and future generations. I want to thank them for all their help and support.

To operate the statewide FTA successfully, we must constantly evaluate its effectiveness and capacity, while looking for smarter and cheaper ways to accomplish our mission. For example, we plan to hold down printing costs by asking members to consider an electronic version of the Footprint magazine, thus saving trees and money. We are also enlisting interns from the University of Florida to help perform roles in public relations, development and program management, which realizes savings over full-time employees. Other exciting developments are in the works.

Unfortunately, the cost of fuel, supplies, and other business expenses has increased. There are other cost factors, too. Recently, a large tree limb unexpectedly fell on the Florida Trail Association headquarters and caused damage to its new roof. Our aging fleet of crew vehicles requires more frequent repair. Increased financial demands, even for a lean and nimbly run non-profit organization, cannot be met without raising more revenue.

This means that for the first time since 2007, FTA’s Board of Directors is asking our members to support the FTA with an increase in their annual membership dues. This decision was not made lightly. Our Board of Directors agreed to raise the membership fees almost two years ago, but deferred implementing the increase until now.

If you are a member, please continue your loyal and generous support for the Florida Trail Association, and consider renewing at a higher level. If you are not a member, please join us.  We thank you again for your generous support, and look forward to working with you to build a strong future for FTA, the FNST, and hiking opportunities throughout Florida.
