Sawgrass prairie
An open sawgrass prairie at Big Cypress (Donn Brown)
Razor-sharp grasses rise from a sticky plain of marl in the Everglades “River of Grass” at the southern of the Florida Trail as you hike through Big Cypress National Preserve. Bedrock is at the surface here, with a few inches of water flowing across it in a perpetual drainage towards Florida Bay. South Florida is the only place on earth you’ll find this unique environment, a place of stark beauty.
