Length: 37.7 miles (linear)

The thru trail follows the west side of Bull Creek along the old railroad grade. Ties and hardware remain along the route. Pines in the northeast corner of the property still have "catfaces" (areas on trees where iron gutters were attached to harvest the pitch). Additional trailside history includes a small cemetery in Bull Creek, flow wells, and the remains of a turpentine still and sawmill. Today, the property is managed jointly by St. Johns River Water Management District and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for flood water retention, wildlife management, and public recreational use.

Overview

Trail riders at Forever Florida (M. Timothy O'Keefe)At the south end the trail passes through Forever Florida, a working cattle ranch and private nature-oriented resort. Hikers have the opportunity of viewing sandhill cranes and wood storks along with cattle. The main development of the eco-resort is north of the trail and hosts a restaurant, a nature-based gift shop, swamp buggy tours, bicycle and equestrian trails, nature walks and a butterfly garden.

Further north, the trail passes through the Bull Creek Wildlife Management Area. In the past, this area was used for grazing, timbering, and the production of naval stores. A system of rail and tram roads for logging was established during the early 20th century.

Conditions

The trail through Bull Creek WMA is open to hikers year round. It follows old tramways as it passes through flatwoods, cypress-dotted prairie, scrub oak, sand pine, cypress and hardwood swamp. Wading may be necessary in wet seasons. The trail through Forever Florida (Crescent J Ranch) crosses a working cattle ranch.

Precautions

You may encounter cattle in Forever Florida. Give them a wide berth. The blue-blazes through Forever Florida are the property owners and are NOT part of the Florida Trail. Wear safety orange during hunting seasons. Sign in/out at the Bull Creek WMA register box at the check station bulletin board, and/or at Levee 73.

Restrictions

Hiking on the trail through the Forever Florida property is limited to FTA members, who must carry membership cards. Members should phone Forever Florida before crossing their property at 407-957-9794 ext. 200. They are very friendly to thru-hikers.

The Forever Florida campsite was built for the trail rides offered by Florida Eco-Safaris. Hikers should yield the campsite to any Forever Florida guests.

The Bull Creek WMA is open for hunting during Florida's special weapon and general gun hunting seasons. Check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (352-732-1225) for hunting dates. Hikers must camp only in designated sites. Campfires are permitted only in fire circles at campsites.

In Bull Creek the south and east side of the loop form the official thru-trail. The west and north side of the loop passes the hunt camp and entrance station.
