FT Pine Log

Length: 26.5 miles (linear)

Pine Log State Forest lies north of Panama City and sits outside the pleasant small town of Ebro, where you’ll find restaurants, a motel, and several re-supply options for a long-distance hike.

Overview

Pinelog (Deb Blick) Leaving the protected corridor along Econfina Creek, the trail continues west along a connecting road walk to Pine Log State Forest, approximating the future route of the Florida Trail. By 2005, expect the trail to be moved onto a protected corridor through this region, presently in the acquisition phase. This segment includes long stretches of lonesome highway with few services before reaching Pine Log State Forest. Walk through both natural pine flatwoods and pine plantations in Florida’s oldest state forest, established in 1936.

Conditions

The hiking on this trail is mostly on flat terrain, passing cypress-lined lakes on woods trails and using forest roads through silviculture areas. Low areas and stream crossings by bridge may require wading after heavy rains.

Precautions

Forestry practices may alter trail markings. Wear blaze orange during all hunts.

Restrictions

Pine Log State Forest does not take camping reservations. Campfires in the State Forest are permitted only in fire rings and grills at the campsites. During hunting seasons camping in Pine Log State Forest is restricted to the forest campground. At the request of St Joe Timber & Development Co. we have removed our trail from Moore's Pasture. The trail has temporarily been relocated onto SR 20 between Econfina Creek and Ebro until a new trail route can be acquired. The thru trail thus bypasses Pine Log State Forest, but the trails in the forest remain maintained and open. Thru hikers can elect to follow an official alternate route through Pine Log by following SR 79 south from the intersection with SR 20 and picking up the old trail route just north of Pine Log Creek. This will provide thru-hikers with opportunities to camp.
