Length: 36.9 miles (linear)

This lengthy section approximates the future route of the Florida Trail as it leads you through stretches of cultivated timberlands and into a vast floodplain forest draining into the Gulf of Mexico. The trail traverses two privately owned timber tracts in this lightly populated region, where you can expect to encounter active logging, and follows the edge of San Pedro Bay WMA on its way to the Econfina River.

Overview

Fungi (Bob Coveney)Most of this section of trail is a public-spirited effort of the Foley Land and Timber Company in cooperation with the Florida Trail Association. The forestry practices are visible along the trail. The Econfina River flows diagonally across the section. Deer, turkey, and other wildlife may be observed on occasion. Private hunt clubs lease the land for hunting.

South of the trail, the city of Perry (crossroads of US 98, US 27, and US 221) is the home of the Forest Capital Museum State Park, which commemorates Florida’s long history as a timber-producing state. In late October, the Florida forestry industry celebrates its good fortunes with the gala Florida Forestry Festival. A parade, a giant fish fry, an awards banquet, and a crafts exposition attract nearly 50,000 people to this Big Bend city's festival every year. Hikers are welcome to attend.

Conditions

Expect easy to moderate hiking on graded forest roads through remote pine forests with occasional hardwoods. Various spots along the trail may require wading during wet seasons or after heavy rains. Only a minor canopy of shade covers most of the route.

Precautions

This section has a labyrinth of forest roads, some of which are not shown on the map. Additionally, some blaze trees and posts may have been removed during timber harvests. Be very careful at critical road intersections. It is important to follow the correct road when the trail turns, and few roads in this area have signs. Carry map and compass. Pack sufficient water and supplies.

Restrictions

Hunting is permitted in San Pedro Bay WMA. No camping is allowed during hunt seasons. Check hunting dates with FFWCC. Hikers must be a member of FTA and have a current membership card in their possession.
